Introducing Caché

Caché is the post-relational database management system, providing a new technology that performs and scales with transaction processing, while offering backward compatibility and interoperability.

Today we are in the midst of a transition to a network-centric information era. Computer operations cross all the traditional enterprise boundaries. Unlimited number of users work in heterogeneous networks, and customers and suppliers are part of the information flow. Although this environment is very complex, users demand complete transparency, extremely high transaction throughput, high availability, and absolute data security. That is exactly what Caché delivers.

Features of Caché
Lean Data Storage

Multidimensional arrays are the best way to depict complex data structures. In order to further enhance transaction-processing performance, Caché implements the concept of "sparse arrays." Sparse arrays are data structures that eliminate unnecessary overhead. Database space is occupied only by actual data; nonexistent data do not occupy any space at all. In addition to reducing storage costs, this truly "lean" database technology enhances performance and scalability by reducing disk I/O.

The Dynamic Database

"Dynamic" means you can create or delete records and attributes based on the tasks at hand; you can even merge information with different numbers of dimensions. In practical terms, this means Caché is not only fast as a production environment, but it also allows you to modify data models extremely quickly.

Objects Make Sense

Object-oriented technology grew out of a realization that human beings do not think in terms of integers, strings, and other computer-
centric data types. Humans think about objects. They also think about complex objects in simple ways. Objects are becoming the technology of choice for building world-class transaction-processing applications.

Objects Are Modular

Internally, any object can be altered without affecting the rest of the code. Conversely, changing your user interface won't affect your application's internal business logic. Thus, objects greatly simplify the process of upgrading or maintaining your application.

Objects are Interoperable

Call up someone in Kyoto, and talk about cars. Oh, you might need a translator, but a "car object" is the same worldwide. It works the same way with object-oriented programming. Create an object, and it can be understood, used, even manipulated by other applications, regardless of their source language

Maximum Performance by Direct Data Access

Caché Object Script gives developers direct access to their multidimensional database. Cache's Distributed Cache Protocol (for intelligent cache management) and Dynamic Namespace Mapping (for transparent networking) guarantee the highest possible performance, even in the largest network configurations.

Legacy Performance through SQL Access

Realistically, legacy relational applications will continue to play a role for years to come. So, for backwards compatibility and ease of migration, Caché SQL provides relational access to multidimensional data for those applications that require it. Head-to-head comparison has shown that a conventional relational application ran nearly 5 times faster once connected to a multidimensional database via Caché SQL.

Leading Edge Development with Object Access

Caché includes powerful object database and development capabilities, allowing professional developers to make full use of their energy and creativity. Unlike the academically oriented object systems that have come before, Caché objects are designed for production transaction processing applications that must perform, even under the most demanding circumstances.

Choice of Environments for GUI and Web Development

For building world class GUI and Web applications, Caché creates ActiveX, Java, or C++ renditions of Caché objects, thus allowing programmers to work in their favorite user interface development environments. Caché provides a close link between Caché objects and Visual Basic. Caché also comes complete with Caché Web Link, which enables transaction processing over the Internet.

Caché 5

For IT organizations, software vendors, and application service providers (ASPs), speed and scalability are the two key e-business success factors. Caché 5 fulfills those e-business requirements and provides advanced capabilities to deliver the highest levels of performance for Web transaction processing. Featured in Caché 5 is Caché Server Pages technology that enables fast development of dynamic Web applications. Caché Server Pages supports concurrent development by programmers and Web page authors by fully integrating code-based and tag-based development.

Caché Server Pages

Caché Server Pages is our new high-performance dynamic server page technology for building industrial strength Web applications. Caché Server Pages can be used to support advanced dynamic Web sites, mobile phone displays, application-to-application services, as well as traditional business applications.

Caché Server Pages provides an advanced object-oriented development approach for database applications and ultrahigh performance and scalability at runtime. Caché Server Pages are compatible with off-the-shelf Web page tool or text editors, and supports HTML, XML, WML, and other Web-oriented mark-up languages.
